Brandon Flowers - R&R - Swallow It

In case you missed it like I did, Brandon Flower's new single "Swallow It" is available for download now from all the major providers (it was released on August 24th, 2010). The song struck me as unpolished at first compared to "Crossfire," but within a few listens and after a scan of the lyrics I realized what I should have known from the onset - it's on purpose.

The second single from Flamingo (due out September 14, 2010), "Swallow It" sets the scene with a baby who has bitten off more than it can chew and is facing the necessary growing pains of life. As I understand it, Brandon writes about what is happening around him, in a very poetic if not guarded way. Could he be talking about the growth pains we are facing in our world today, or of the observations of the growth of a child? Fitting after "cutting the cord" on "Human." I think it's about all of the comments one might hear as a young recording artist who is experiencing rapid fame.

"Swallow It" is a bright song, that reminds me a lot of Keane's "Clear Skies" even though it's fully it's own song. It's just the joy and the hope that it brings, in an ever darkening world that makes me feel happy.

So, Advocate of Joy or a Baby Crawling? I think it's a little bit of both. What could be better?

Give it a listen, I think you'll enjoy it.

Brandon Flowers - "Swallow It" - Lyrics

Seek out the light between
Time and confusion glowing up ahead
Instead of slipping through
You bit off more, much more than you could chew

You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down
And take the time to evolve
You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down

We had a lot to learn
Table manners and grace, how to wait your turn when
Time came to clear your slate
You had too much, had too much on your plate

You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down
And take the time to evolve
You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down

Take your medicine and crawl before you walk
Think it through before you open you open your mouth to talk
Be an advocate of joy
Find your little heart's desire and

Follow it
Whoa baby you're not ready, slow down
And take the time to evolve
You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down

(Baby you're not ready!)

You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down
And take the time to evolve
You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, now

(Slow down!)

No, no, no, no!

Don't be afraid, this is your year
It's gonna be alright, you're a performer
Just take your time, but not too much time

No, no, no, no!
