R&R Drum Solo Friday - Will Calhoun

Anyone who was a fan of the Rock/Metal scene in the 80's and 90's has no doubt heard of the visual expression that is none other than Living Colour. Best known for their break-out classic, "Cult of Personality," Living Colour remains a rare bread as to this day there exists very few all-black hard rock bands, and currently none in the mainstream of music. Although Living Colour is still in play and right now supporting their 2009 offering, The Chair In The Doorway, they've softened quite a bit from their debut release, Vivid and taken a more free-form approach to rock music following the leading of drummer Will Calhoun.

It was easy to like Living Colour. They had strong song themes (that are more valid today than ever), great production, and an amazingly inventive and solid rhythm section. Will Calhoun has always been one of my go-to all-time-favorite drummers. His sense of timing and musicality is hard to ignore. Although I wish Living Colour would return to mainstream rock with a new, heavier album, I'm a huge fan of Will's solo efforts. Today Will can be seen (and heard) at any number of drum festivals and expos giving clinics and showcasing his improvisational solos experimenting with electronic drums, synths, FX pedals and acoustic drums of every kind.
Here are a few Will Calhoun highlights.
