Stryper - Breaking the Law - Is Stryper's Message Muddy?
Stryper Live in Melbourne, Australia covering Judas Preist's "Breaking the Law"
Dropping the strypes they were known for, 20 years ago Stryper went "Against the Law" growing beards and taking photos in front of jail cells. Now, they find themselves "Breaking the Law." What's going on with this band who's core focus has always been to preach the message of Jesus?
A little homage to music of their youth. ....And I have to say they are quite good at it. Judas Priest's classic single, "Breaking the Law," could not sound better by anyone and if this video cam clip is any indication, we are in for a treat when The Covering hits the street. Video camera audio at concerts is usually pure crap, but this recording is rather good, sounding better than many band's studio releases. The guitars are crisp, thd drums are better than decent, and Michael's vocals are amazing.
So what about the concern with muddying the message of Christ with covers of secular songs? Have they traded in their faith for some cheap thrills?
To those who think Stryper have strayed, lead singer Michael Sweet has this statement:
"This will be an opportunity for Robert, Oz, Tim and myself to loosen up and have some fun. For those of you who may think that we're walking away from our faith - your wrong. We've never been more serious about our faith at any point in our lives."
"We grew up listening to many different styles of music and there is a list of bands that influenced us throughout our musical education. Bands like JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, SCORPIONS, VAN HALEN, UFO, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, QUEEN, KANSAS and many others, helped to shape our sound and make us who we are today, musically speaking. We grew up on the streets of LA playing every club in town from Gazzari's to The Whisky to The Troubadour to you name it. We played covers from all the bands mentioned above and we shaped our own sound from listening and performing songs from these classic bands. We wanted to step outside the box and record a record that shows you, the fans, where we come from - our historical, musical roots so to speak. It's a side to Stryper that no one has really seen or heard before, or at least quite like this."
From what I've heard, the songs are amazing and I can't wait to hear the album in it's full 16 bit 44.1 kHz glory.
"Breaking the Law" - Lyrics
There I was completely wasting, out of work and down
All inside it's so frustrating as I drift from town to town
Feel as though nobody cares if I live or die
So I might as well begin to put some action in my life
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
So much for the golden future, I can't even start
I've had every promise broken, there's anger in my heart
You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
If you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
You don't know what it's like!!
we we wo we wo ploice car sounds
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law

Sep 3, 2010 at 8:56 AM This was an amazing gig, I was there! Considering the guys have not been down under for 21 years, I couldn't believe how good they sounded. Man. they are very under-rated. Always have been. Do yourself a favour and see them live next time they are in town.
Looking forward to their next album of original material which they will most likely be recording next year. Most of the material is already written.

Sep 17, 2010 at 7:58 AM So Ira, I take it you never listen to the radio? Of "Enjoy" "Secular" music? Christians aren't allowed to enjoy "secular" music?
