The Avett Brothers - I and Love and You

Hold the phones. The Avett Brothers just released “I and Love and You” the title track single from their upcoming album. This is the North Carolina group’s first album produced on a major label (Sony/Columbia) and so far it doesn’t disappoint. The song is polished but still very much connected to the rootsy, honest sound they’ve been making for years. A graceful ballad navigated by the brothers’ seemingly effortless harmony gave me chills on my first listen, and on my fifteenth. The song is beautiful, no doubt, and it’s chock full of the thoughtful, heartfelt lyrics consistently occurring in Avett songs.

“One foot in and one foot back, but it don’t pay to live like that, so I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks for never to return”

They croon together on the chorus for “Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in.”. Images of the city, of femininity and anecdotes from life, “I used all my words to fight” paint a beautiful and weary picture of traveling, maybe on an actual road, but more urgently on a path through life. Waves of piano and cello add depth and feeling and the story ends with the song’s title, which seems to be the heart of the entire album, even without hearing it in its entirety. I’m steering clear of a complete song spoiler, but in those simply put last lyrics, you understand the conflict, the consuming burden in life and of course art: love.

September 29th is the full album release date, but three songs from the album, including this one are available now on iTunes. Or you can download this one for free!

"I and Love and You" - Lyrics

Load the car and write the note
Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell ones that need to know
We are headed north

All one foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay, to live like that
So I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks
For never to return

Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in

When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Oh it's just a waste of time
It's such a waste of time

That women shes got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time

Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in

Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then I am today
Look at the things I do

Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in

Dumbed down and numbed my time and age
You dreams to catch this world the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
I and love and you
I and love and you
The highway
